As many variety “discoveries” as I have made, you would think lots of Morgans would be among them. Not so though. Until the middle of last month I had never attempted to get a VAM listed. VAMs are die varieties on Morgan and Peace dollars. Why have I never submitted a Morgan or Peace dollar for listing you ask? I really don’t know. I have known Leroy and his lovely wife Marilyn for quite some time now. In fact, Marilyn went out of her way to introduce me to people and point me in the right direction to learn more about die varieties some time ago. I will forever be thankful for my friendship with the Van Allens. I know Leroy must be swamped with coins to attribute and I never wanted to load him down, which is what I tend to do when I get on a roll. So, when I found something new, I just pointed it out to the buyer and the buyer usually had it listed. So, it is not that I have not found any, I just never submitted them.
That is all about to change! I finally sent 5 coins to Leroy and 3 of them came back as new listings. Two of them belong to me and one does not. The one that does not belong to me is in DLRC Thursday Auction Number 376 which ends on Thursday, May 21st. For the first time in a good number of years, I am actually submitting varieties for listing - all kinds to many different places. Many of them belong to DLRC and/or DGS clients. When that is the case, we try to get them in a sale so the right collector can end up with it.
This new VAM is 1894-S VAM-7 which has a doubled die obverse that shows most prominently on Liberty’s profile. Therefore, it will be called a “Doubled Profile” VAM. I will be posting the listings and images of all three new VAMs to VAMworld this weekend.
Quoting Leroy, this is how the listings will appear:
1883: VAM 21 (Doubled 18-3, 1 base between 1 &
I-4 R-5. Doubled 1 below base, left 8 at top inside of lower loop. Horizontal bar of left base of 1 to the lower right of left 1. Heavy die polishing lines in denticles below date.
1894-S: VAM-7 (Doubled Profile) I-2 R-5. Slightly doubled profile of nose, lips and chin.
1921 Morgan VAM-1AC2 (Die file lines in STATES, Retained Cud at E) I-3 R-6. Die crack from rim to rim above E with slightly tilted field of retained cud die break.
To see and bid on the 1894-S VAM-7 discovery piece reported by me, just click on the date to the left.
You can anticipate that I will make new variety reports here on a fairly regular basis.
Have fun!
