The folks at CAC (Certified Acceptance Corp) have shared some information about submissions and acceptance percentages with us. CAC started their services in 2007.

Coins Submitted: 144,137

Insurance Value of Coins Submitted: $ 801,093,163.

Green stickers issued: 68,034

Gold stickers issued: 296

Wholesale Trading Volume: $139,000,000

Statistically, it looks like CAC is making a big impact in their first two years. From our perspective at David Lawrence Rare Coins, we know that CAC coins are already an important part of the coin market. Many collectors are looking for NGC and PCGS coins that are CAC-stickered — and they are hard to find in the marketplace.

Has CAC ever verified a coin which was slabbed by someone other than PCGS or NGC? I emailed them, but never got an answer back. I also asked what was their failure rate for those two companies where they did not agree to a sticker. At the end of the day, isn’t it what your eyes tell you? I have several coins which are slabbed by “others” and am very happy. After all, just having a coin which may have a mintage of under a million, is exciting to me, and the condition while important, is subjective, as I have heard that circulated coins have been given mint state grades as have cleaned coins. When you consider that a silver coin or even a copper has made it to 2010 from the 1800′s and made it past the melts of peaks in metal prices of the past, makes it special. With gold and silver hitting new highs and staying there, it only makes sence that a non-lover of coins will buy them for the melting pots as profit is the driving them to lesser numbers. Eventually, a 1921 Morgan will gain new respect as will the remaining mint and proof sets, which have to be getting harder to find with all the break ups of mint and proof sets, yet they can be found in mass at all coin shows and TV. So when will the days of walking into the shows and not seeing mint Morgans in a bucket for $19 each end?

I agree. You should continue to lobby CAC to approve other grading services. It’s in the best interest of the industry I think.
