Have you ever expected to hear such words? $2,000 for a 1992-D Lincoln cent? Not even in MS-70! So what’s up with that price?!!! Believe it or not, it has happened and the buyer and seller were both happy about it.

With continued research, more and more varieties have been found. Even different design styles or types continue to be found and such is the case with the Lincoln Memorial reverse cents. There are now seven different design varieties known for the reverse of the Memorial cent.

James Wiles, 20th and 21st century die variety attributor for CONECA, has done an outstanding job of cataloging these design changes and has made the information available on “Variety Vista,” a part of CONECA’s website. Be sure to check out these links. I don’t know about you but the thought of a common date cent from my pocket being worth $2,000 is very enticing and worthy of pursuit through my pocket change. To date, at least three 1992-D RDV-007 (with the AM on reverse being close together) have been found and sold for over $1500! The 1992-D Lincoln is supposed to come with RDV-006 or the “Wide AM.”

There are several “Wide AM/Close AM” reverse varieties that sell from a decent premium to an excellent premium. You really should go to the CONECA website and learn all you can about these wrong die usage coins. To make it easier to begin your search, following is a short table of scarce to extremely rare varieties you should target when looking:

Dates that should be RDV-005 or RDV-007 but are RDV-006 (with the wide AM)

  • 1988, 1988-D (only those with serif style designer’s initials also), and 1999 (Extremely Rare)
  • 1998 (Rare)
  • 2000 (Scarce)

Dates that should be RDV-005 or RDV-006 but are RDV-007 (close AM)

  • 1992, 1992-D and 1998-S (Extremely Rare)
  • 1999-S (Rare)

Good luck hunting these and let us know what you find after reading this report!

Mike
